Maurice Joseph Tobin (22 May 1901-19 July 1953) was the Democratic Mayor of Boston from 3 July 1938 to 4 January 1945 (succeeding Frederick Mansfield and preceding John E. Kerrigan), Governor of Massachusetts from 4 January 1945 to 2 January 1947 (succeeding Leverett Saltonstall and preceding Robert F. Bradford), and United States Secretary of Labor from 13 August 1948 to 20 January 1953 (succeeding Lewis B. Schwellenbach and preceding Martin Durkin).
Biography[]
Maurice Joseph Tobin was born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1901, and he worked for New England Telephone before entering politics under the auspices of James Michael Curley and serving in the State House from 1927 to 1929, as Mayor of Boston from 1938 to 1945 (during which he supported anti-discrimination laws and halted public works projects), as Governor from 1945 to 1947 (calling for additional unemployment benefits, veterans' benefits, rent control, and a ban on racial discrimination in hiring), and as Secretary of Labor from 1948 to 1953. He died at his summer home in Scituate in 1953, shortly after leaving office.
