Maurice FitzGerald, 4th Earl of Kildare

Maurice FitzGerald, 4th Earl of Kildare (1318-25 August 1390) was Earl of Kildare from 1329 to 1390, succeeding Richard FitzGerald, 3rd Earl of Kildare and preceding Gerald FitzGerald, 5th Earl of Kildare.

Biography[]

Maurice FitzGerald was the son of Thomas FitzGerald, 2nd Earl of Kildare, and he succeeded his brother Richard FitzGerald, 3rd Earl of Kildare as Earl of Kildare in 1329. In 1339, he crushed the rebellious O'Dempsey clan of Leinster before quelling the O'More clan in 1346, and he was knighted by King Edward III of England for serving under him at Calais in 1347. In 1360, he served as Lord Justice of Ireland, and he served in Parliament numerous times. He died in 1390 at the age of 72.
