Matthieu Nathan (born 1985) was President of France from 2016.

Biography[]

Matthieu Nathan was born in Paris, France in 1985 to a secular Jewish family, and he worked as a Socialist Party strategist before being elected to the Chamber of Deputies for the PS. In 2016, he was selected as party leader, and he led his party to win second place in that year's elections, winning 20.42% of the vote and 7 seats to The Republicans' 22.17% and 8 seats. In the ensuing presidential election, he defeated Republican nominee Alexandre Grande 54.5% to 45.5%.


During Nathan's presidency, the Chamber of Deputies voted 21-4 to approve an agricultural subsidy, 18-14 to legalize prostitution (a move supported by The Republicans, En Marche!, MoDem, La France Insoumise, and the EELV and opposed by the Socialists and the National Front), and 18-10 to abolish the income tax. In the general election of late 2016, the Socialists remained in the lead with 7 seats and 20.82% of the vote, while The Republicans dropped to 20.42% and 7 seats, En Marche! rose to 15.8% and 6 seats, the National Front dropped to 13.76% and 5 seats, MoDem dropped to 12.11% and 4 seats, France Insoumise rose to 10.02% and 4 seats, and EELV dropped to 7.07% and 2 seats.
