Matthew Griswold (25 March 1714 – 28 April 1799) was the Federalist Governor of Connecticut from 13 May 1784 to 11 May 1786, succeeding Jonathan Trumbull and preceding Samuel Huntington.

Biography[]

Matthew Griswold was born in Lyme, Connecticut in 1714, a scion of a distinguished family; he later fathered Roger Griswold. He served in the General Assembly in 1748 and from 1751 to 1759, on the Council of Assistants from 1759 to 1769, as Deputy Governor of Connecticut from 1769 to 1784, and as Governor from 1784 to 1786. He twice evaded British soldiers searching for him in his own home during the American Revolutionary War. Griswold died in 1799.
