Matthew Buoncompagni

Matthew Buoncompagni (1801-1868) was a Democratic member of the New York State Assembly from 1856 to 1858.

Biography[]

Matteo Buoncompagni was born in Grosseto, Tuscany in 1801. He came from a Protestant family, and he emigrated to the United States in 1820 due to religious persecution. Buoncompagni settled in New York City before traveling up the Hudson River to Poughkeepsie, where he became a barrel-maker and became involved in Democratic politics. Buoncompagni served as a political organizer before serving on the city council and in the State Assembly from 1856 to 1858, one of the first Italian state legislators anywhere in the country. He died in 1868.
