Matthäus Busemann (18 October 1780-18 June 1815) was a colonel of the Brunswick Line Infantry of the British Army, who fought and died in the Battle of Waterloo (Battle for Hougoumont).
Biography[]
Busemann was born in Wolfenbuttel in the German state of Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel in 1780. He enlisted in the British Army in 1798 and was sent to fight in the Egyptian Campaign against France's army under General Napoleon Bonaparte. Having gained this experience, he was promoted to the command of a colonel of Brunswick Line Infantry.
In the 1815 Hundred Days campaign, Busemann's army fought against the French at the Battle of Waterloo. Busemann commanded his regiment on the left flank of the British at Hougoumont, and on 18 June 1815, he did battle with General Jean-Baptiste Drouet (the Comte d'Erlon) and his French army during the battle. Busemann led a bayonet charge against the French that charged up the slope to the village, but Busemann was bayonetted to death and killed.
