
Matteo Cocchiola (1897 - October 1918) was a Royal Italian Army private who served in the Arditi during World War I. He was killed in action at the Battle of Monte Grappa in 1918.
Biography[]
Matteo Cocchiola was born in Avellino, Campania, Italy in 1897, the twin brother of Luca Vincenzo Cocchiola. During World War I, the brothers were ddrafted into the Royal Italian Army, serving in the elite Arditi unit in the Alps. In 1918, the brothers took part in the final Italian offensive against the Austro-Hungarians in Veneto, fighting at the Battle of Monte Grappa. While Luca was assigned to serve as an armored shock trooper, Matteo was assigned to a regular battalion. He was killed during an Austro-Hungarian bombing run, and his brother found his body after a lengthy search process.
