Matsudaira Sadaaki

Matsudaira Sadaaki (18 January 1847-12 July 1908) was a Japanese daimyo and the ruler of the Kuwana Domain from 1859 to 1868.

Biography[]

Matsudaira Sadaaki was born in Ichigaya, Edo in 1847, the brother of Matsudaira Katamori and Tokugawa Mochinaga. He was adopted to succeed Matsudaira Sadamichi as daimyo of the Kuwana Domain, and he was made Kyoto Shoshidai (personal representative of the Shogun to the Emperor) in 1864, becoming the last person to hold that post. He and his brother helped arrange the punitive First Choshu expedition, deployed Kuwana troops during the Kinmon incident, and later commanded the pro-Shogunate army at the Battle of Toba-Fushimi. He later retreated to the Aizu Domain and then to the Ezo Republic, and he was forced to surrender in Yokohama after not being able to afford exile in America or Europe. He was imprisoned for a few years before being pardoned and released in 1872, and he later studied English and attended Rutgers University. He led a group of former Kuwana samurai against the Satsuma Rebellion in 1877, and he died in Tokyo in 1908.
