Biography[]
Mateo Gonzalez Manrique served in the Spanish Army at first, rising to the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel before being posted to the Americas as the Governor of Spanish Florida in 1813. During the War of 1812, he sided with the Red Sticks against the United States, and because Spain was an ally of the United Kingdom, he sided with the British against Andrew Jackson's US army when they marched into Florida. At Pensacola, his forces were defeated, and he was forced to surrender the city. In 1819, Florida was ceded to the United States after the war.
