Matawan

Matawan is a borough in Monmouth County, New Jersey. Its name was originally "Mechananienk", meaning "where two rivers come together" in Lenape, and its name was transliterated to "Matovancons" by Dutch settlers, and then to "Matawan". The Dutch settled the area in the 17th century, and Scots-Irish settlers from New Hampshire later settled the area as "New Aberdeen"; this name would be used for Matawan Township after it renamed itself to "Aberdeen Township". On 28 June 1895, Matawan was formed as a borough after seceding from Matawan Township.
