Masamichi Shintani was born in Tokyo, Japan in 1975, and he became a lawyer at Ryuzo Genda's Kabukicho-based law office and came to see himself as "the ace attorney at Genda Law Office," mentoring Takayuki Yagami. Shintani and Yagami became rivals after Yagami achieved a landmark acquittal for suspected murderer Shinpei Okubo, but Yagami left the firm in 2015 after Okubo was arrested for murdering his girlfriend on his release. In 2018, Shintani defended the yakuza Kyohei Hamura from a murder charge, and he enlisted Yagami's help as an investigator, although he insisted that he would play the leading role in Hamura's defense.

After Hamura's acquittal, Hamura decided to investigate "the Mole", the serial killer involved in the AD-9 conspiracy, which related to the earlier 2015 killing of Koichi Waku at the ADDC. He conducted an investigation of his own and suspected Yuji Shono, the ADDC's lead researcher, but he was ambushed murdered by "the Mole" Mitsuru Kuroiwa, his eyes gouged out, and his body stuffed into the closet at the Yagami Detective Agency to send a message to Yagami.
