Mary Swann

Mary Swann was an African-American slave who lived on the Rich Hill plantation near Bel Alton, Maryland during the American Civil War. Enslaved by Samuel Cox, she witnessed John Wilkes Booth and David Herold hiding out at Cox's estate, but she later lied and told the pursuing authorities that Booth and Herold had not entered the home, protecting her enslaver.
