Mary Peltola

Mary Sattler Peltola (31 August 1973-) was an American Democratic politician who served in the US House of Representatives (D-AK) from 13 September 2022 to 3 January 2025, succeeding Don Young and preceding Nick Begich III.

Biography[]

Mary Sattler Peltola was born in Anchorage, Alaska to a Yup'ik family, the daughter of businessman and unsuccessful Democratic political candidate Ward H. Sattler. She went on to serve in the House of Representatives from 1999 to 2009, and then served as executive director of the Kuskokwim River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission, on the Bethel City Council from 2011 to 2013, as a state lobbyist from 2015 to 2017, and as the Democratic nominee for the US House of Representatives during the 2022 special election, facing Republican candidates Sarah Palin and Nick Begich III. She won the runoff election against Sarah Palin with 51.47% of the vote in an upset.
