Martin de Tejas (born 1528) was an admiral of New Spain.
Biography[]
Martin de Tejas was born in 1528 in Spain, and became the first mate of Admiral Antonio de Veracruz on his voyage to Mexico. He later assisted him in his exploratory expeditions along the Gulf Coast, and took over his fleet after he died in a storm off present-day Louisiana in 1548. Tejas became the new admiral, and despite his inability to hold military command, Tejas was able to map more lands for New Spain.
