
Martin de Padilla y Manrique (1540-1602) was Secretary of State and War of Spain under Philip II of Spain at the time of the Anglo-Spanish War.
Biography[]
Martin de Padilla y Manrique was born in Catalanazor, Spain in 1540, and he belonged to an important Castilian aristocratic family. He became Count of Santa Gadea and an admiral of Spain, and he fought in the Anglo-Spanish War, the French Wars of Religion, and the Dutch Revolt. In 1597, he commanded another Spanish armada during a failed invasion of England, resulting in a defeat at the hands of the Royal Navy. He died in 1602.
