Biography[]

Martin Henry Glynn was born in Kinderhook, Columbia County, New York in 1871, the son of Irish Catholic immigrants, and he was raised in Valatie. He became a lawyer in 1897 and wrote for the Albany Times-Union before becoming its editor, publisher, and owner. He went on to serve in the US House of Representatives from 1899 to 1901, becoming the youngest member of the House at the age of 26. Glynn also served as State Comptroller from 1907 to 1908, Lieutenant Governor in 1913, and Governor from 1913 to 1914 after Governor William Sulzer was impeached. Glynn was the first Catholic Governor of New York, and he was defeated for re-election in 1914. He went on to serve as a delegate to the 1916 and 1924 Democratic National Conventions, and he shot himself in 1924 after suffering from chronic back pain throughout his adult life.
