Martin Frederick Ansel

Martin Frederick Ansel (12 December 1850-23 August 1945) was the Democratic Governor of South Carolina from 15 January 1907 to 17 January 1911, succeeding Duncan Clinch Heyward and preceding Coleman Livingston Blease.

Biography[]

Martin Frederick Ansel was born in Charleston, South Carolina in 1850, the son of German immigrant parents. He practiced law in Franklin, North Carolina from 1870 to 1874 and then in Greenville, South Carolina. He served in the State House from 1882 to 1888, as solicitor in the eighth Judicial Circuit from 1888 to 1901, and as Governor from 1907 to 1911. He established statewide prohibition during his term, and he died in 1945.
