Martin Couture-Rouleau (1989-20 October 2014), also known as Ahmad LeConverti, was a member of the Islamic State who was responsible for killing 53-year-old warrant officer Patrice Vincent by hitting him with a car. He was killed on the same day as the attack.
Biography[]
Martin Couture-Rouleau was born in 1989 in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu to a French-speaking Canadian family. He converted to Islam after being separated from his girlfriend and their child in 2013, and he prayed at a mosque regularly. Rouleau owned a failed small power-washing business initially, and he later referred to himself as Ahmad LeConverti. Rouleau supported the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) online and posted about the superiority of Islam to Christianity in both English and French. Later, he became angry that Canada supported the United States in bombing the Islamic State in the Middle East, and was motivated by this to kill a Canadian soldier. Rouleau dreamed of becoming a martyr, and was carried away with an extreme interpretation of the Quran - even the 5+ friends that he converted to Islam admitted this. He became one of 90 terrorists under surveillance because of their support for Islamic terrorism in 2014.
On 20 October 2014, he decided to carry out his suicide attack against the Canadians. He rammed a car into two Canadian Army troops in a shopping centre in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, waiting for two hours to find policemen or soldiers to kill. He called 911 and claimed that he committed the attack in the name of Allah, and when a spike belt destroyed his car's tires, he left the car. Rouleau charged at a female police officer with a knife. Rouleau was shot 7 times by the police and killed, ending his rampage.
