Martin Charteris (7 September 1913 – 23 December 1999) was Private Secretary to the Sovereign of the United Kingdom from 1972 to 1977, succeeding Michael Adeane and preceding Philip Moore. He also served as a crossbencher life peer of the House of Lords.
Biography[]
Martin Charteris came from a family of British aristocracy, and he attended Eton and the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst before serving as a Lieutenant-Colonel in the British Army during the Middle Eastern theater of World War II. In 1950, he became Private Secretary to Princess Elizabeth, and he retired from the military a year later. From 1952 to 1972, he served as Assistant Private Secretary under Michael Adeane, and he served as Secretary from 1972 until his 1977 retirement. He became Provost of Eton, serving until 1991. Charteris died in 1999.
