Biography[]
Marta Maria Sahagun Jimenez was born in Zamora, Michoacan, Mexico on 10 April 1953, and she became a National Action Party of Mexico member in 1988. Sahagun met Vicente Fox during her unsuccessful run for Mayor of Celaya, and Fox made her his government spokeswoman in Guanajuato and his press secretary during his presidential campaign and his first year in office. In 2000, Sahagun divorced her veterinarian husband after two years of separation and married Fox, becoming the First Lady. Sahagun was criticized for her spending habits (including having a public staff of 38 people) and for using her position as First Lady to set up a future run for the presidency. Her outspoken views and her powerful role in the presidency made her a controversial woman, and she was accused of illegal business dealings.
