Biography[]
Mark Matthew Fagan was born in Jersey City, New Jersey in 1869, and he worked as an undertaker before becoming a Republican freeholder during his twenties. In 1902, the Republican machine secured Fagan's election over the Democratic incumbent, serving from 1902 to 1907 and from 1913 to 1917. It would be 75 years before another Republican would serve as mayor, and Fagan died in 1955.
