Mark Farrell (15 March 1974-) was Mayor of San Francisco (D) from 23 January to 11 July 2018, interrupting London Breed's terms.
Biography[]
Mark Farrell was born in San Francisco, California in 1974, and he was raised in both California and in his mother's hometown of Probstei, Schleswig-Holstein, West Germany. He graduated from Loyola Marymount University, University College Dublin, and the University of Pennsylvania, and he practiced law as a corporate and securities attorney before being appointed to the Board of Supervisors in 2011. From 8 January 2011 to 23 January 2018, he represented the 2nd district, succeeding Michela Alioto-Pier and preceding Catherine Stefani. He oversaw the closing of the last gun store in the city, oversaw programs aimed at reducing homelessness, created free Wi-Fi in city parks, plazas, and open spaces, and passed the city's landmark open data legislation. He also succeeded in making Kiel, his mother's hometown, a sister city of San Francisco. In January 2018, he was appointed to succeed acting mayor London Breed, who had come into office in December 2017 following the unexpected death of Mayor Ed Lee. Farrell appointed Catherine Stefani to succeed him on the Board of Supervisors, and he served as Mayor until a special election (in which Farrell did not run) led to Breed winning back the office of Mayor in July 2018.
