Countess Marjory of Carrick

Countess Marjory of Carrick (1256-9 November 1292) was the countess of Carrick from 1256 to 1292, succeeding Niall of Carrick and preceding Robert Bruce.

Biography[]

Marjory was born in 1256 to the Catholic Scottish House of Galloway, the daughter of Niall of Carrick. Her first husband, Adam of Kilconquhar, was killed in the Eighth Crusade of 1271. Adam's companion Robert de Brus, 6th Lord of Annandale arrived with the news of Adam's death to Marjory, who was so taken with him that she held him captive until he agreed to marry her at Turnberry Castle. She sired the future Robert I of Scotland, who became the new Earl of Carrick upon her death in 1292.
