Marina Ochoa was born in Colombia to the Ochoa family, a family that made its money through the illegal drug trade. Ochoa was the younger sister of Jorge Luis Ochoa and Fabio Ochoa, with her oldest brother Jorge Luis being several decades older than her. She was known to have an extravagant lifestyle, going on "shopping expeditions" that lasted for weeks, using the money that her brothers had made through the drug trade to buy fancy clothes and a nice house.
In 1989, Marina Ochoa began an affair with Gustavo Gaviria, the cousin of her brothers' business partner Pablo Escobar. When the Medellin Cartel returned to Colombia from Panama after the assassination of Luis Carlos Galan, Ochoa and Gaviria continued their affair, and she suggested that Gaviria have Escobar kill his wife so that Ochoa and Gaviria would not have to hide their relationship.
