Mariano Osorio

Mariano de Osorio (1777-1819) was Governor of Chile from 1814 to 1815 under the Captaincy General of Chile of New Spain during the South American Wars of Liberation.

Biography[]

Osorio was born in Seville and fought in the Peninsular War after 1808, but in 1812 he was sent to the Royal Army in Peru. In 1814 he defeated Bernardo O'Higgins in the Battle of Rancagua, delaying Chilean independence, and was Governor of Chile for one year. In 1817 he was sent to Chile from Peru and won the Second Battle of Cancha Rayada, making good progress, but was defeated at the Battle of Maipu. In 1819 he died of malaria in Havana, Cuba.
