Maria Conchita Alonso

Maria Concepcion "Conchita" Alonso Bustillo (29 June 1957-) was a Cuban-American actress and singer. Alonso was born in Cienfuegos, Cuba, and her family emigrated to Venezuela in 1962 following the Cuban Revolution; she became a model and was crowned Miss Teenager World in 1971 and Miss World/Venezuela in 1975, before releasing her first music album, Love Maniac, in 1979. In 1983, she wrote and sang her most famous song, "Vamos a Bailar", which became a major hit in Cuba, where it was recorded. In 1984, she released her album Maria Conchita, the first of three of her albums to be nominated for Grammy Awards. She also became a television and film actress, a career which continued into the 21st century.

Alonso was a moderate conservative and staunchly anti-communist supporter of the Republican Party; while she was an outspoken critic of Cuban dictator Fidel Castro and Venezuelan dictator Hugo Chavez, accused Barack Obama of emulating the "spread the wealth" policies of socialist states in Latin America, and called Sean Penn a communist, she was an advocate for gay rights and voted for Gary Johnson at the 2016 presidential election rather than back the far-right Republican nominee Donald Trump.
