Marguerite de Navarre (11 April 1492-21 December 1549) was Queen consort of Navarre from 1526 to 1549 as the wife of Henry II of Navarre.
Biography[]
Marguerite de Navarre was born in Angouleme, France in 1492, the daughter of Charles, Count of Angouleme and Louise of Savoy, and the sister of King Francis I of France. At the age of seventeen, she was married to Charles IV of Alencon for political expediency, but there was no offspring from this marriage, and her first husband died in 1525. In 1521, she travelled alone to the court of King Henry VIII of England in London, where they had a dalliance due to Marguerite's natural beauty. In 1525, Marguerite would remarry to King Henry II of Navarre, and she would become an excellent diplomat, negotiating the release of her brother Francis from Emperor Charles V's dungeons. Her only son, Jean, died as an infant in 1530. Marguerite died in Odos, France in 1549 at the age of 57.
