Marcus Freeman

Marcus Freeman was an African-American boxer. Freeman toured North America for fights, boxing in Cuba in 1857 and later in Cincinnati until his winning streak ended in 1864. Freeman ultimately decided to emigrate to Liberia, which he saw as a land of opportunity for African-Americans, and he visited his nephew Matthew Freeman in New York City along the way. While there, he attempted to recruit Jasper Longfield into boxing, but, after he drunkenly made a pass at Matthew's wife Sara Freeman, Matthew kicked his uncle out of the house.
