Marche is one of the twenty regions of Italy, located along the east coast of the peninsula. The name comes from the Frankish term "march", referring to the marches of Ancona, Camerino, and Fermo. The region is bordered by Emilia-Romagna to the north, Tuscany and Umbria to the west, and Abruzzo and Lazio to the south, bordering the Adriatic Sea to the east. Its capital is Ancona, and it had a population of 1,541,692 people in 2011.
