The March of Pannonia was a frontier march of the Frankish Empire and East Francia, existing from 804 to 976. The march was named for the former Roman Empire province of Pannonia, and the march was formed after Charlemagne defeated the Avar Khaganate. Pannonia's sole purpose was to check the power of Great Moravia, and it was transformed into the margraviate of Austria after the fall of Great Moravia.
