Marcellus Septimius

Marcellus Septimius (398-463) was the Emperor of the Eastern Roman Empire from 429 AD until his death in 463 AD, succeeding Jovinus as the Augustus of the eastern half of the Roman Empire and preceding Orestes. He was the first ruler of the Septimian dynasty.

Biography[]

Marcellus Septimius was a Christian who believed in conversion by force, and was a confident commander. At the age of 16 in 414 AD he was betrothed to the Eastern Roman Empire House of Flavii scion Leontia, and because he was a Christian, he was allowed to marry her and be given a position of responsibility. He became the heir apparent to the empire after the death of heir apparent Tribigildus Ofonius and the new heir apparent Sextus Flavius in 416 and 427 AD, respectively.

In 429 AD, after the death of Emperor Jovinus, Marcellus became the new emperor of the Eastern Roman Empire. Under his rule, the Eastern Roman Empire fought the Alemanni, Goths, and Sarmatians in Europe and the Berbers in North Africa, and crushed many rebellions. He died in 463 AD, and was succeeded by Orestes.
