Marcel-Bruno Gensoul

Marcel-Bruno Gensoul (12 October 1880-30 December 1973) was a French Navy admiral who commanded the Force de Raid during World War II.

Biography[]

Marcel-Bruno Gensoul was born in Montpellier, France on 12 October 1880, and he served in the French Navy and came to command the Force de Raid at Brest by the start of World War II. By the Fall of France in June 1940, Gensoul was in command of part of the Mediterranean squadron at Mers-el-Kebir, Oran in Algeria, and, on 3 July 1940, the British Royal Navy attacked the French fleet at Mers-el-Kebir with the objective of destroying it before it could be handed over to Nazi Germany. Gensoul never commented on the attack, and he died in Paris in 1973 at the age of 93.
