Manuel de Ascasubi

Manuel de Ascasubi (30 December 1804-25 December 1876) was President of Ecuador from 15 October 1849 to 10 June 1850, succeeding Vicente Ramon Roca and preceding Diego Noboa.

Biography[]

Manuel de Ascasubi was born in Quito, Spanish Empire in 1804. He came from the landed aristocracy, but he sided with the patriot cause during the Ecuadorian War of Independence. He served as Vice President of Ecuador from 1847 to 1849, after which he served as interim President from 1849 to 1850 following an inconclusive presidential election. He reduced the budget deficit by using his own personal wealth to pay the salaries of Ecuador's civil servants, and he also oversaw hospital reform and the introduction of the Jesuits to Ecuadorian territory. In 1849, he survived a coup led by Jose Maria Urvina, but he was overthrown by Urbina in 1850. Afterwards, he served as Finance Minister in 1868, Vice President of Ecuador in 1869, and Interior Minister in 1875. He died in 1876.
