Manuel Blanco Encalada (21 April 1790 – 5 September 1876) was President of Chile from 9 July to 9 September 1826, succeeding Ramon Freire and preceding Agustin Eyzaguirre. He was the first constitutional President of Chile.
Biography[]
Manuel Blanco Encalada was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina on 21 April 1790, and he served in the Spanish Navy before joining the Chilean patriots during the Chilean War of Independence. He rose to the rank of Vice-Admiral under Thomas Cochrane and took part in the capture of Chiloe from the Royalists in 1825. In 1826, he became the first President of Chile, serving as an independent. However, he argued with Congress over its attempts to adopt federalism, forcing him to resign. He went on to fight against the Peruvian-Bolivian Confederation and Spain, and he died in 1876.
