Manto was a prophetess in Greek mythology. She is a daughter of Tiresias (himself a prophet). Tiresias, who was originally a man, was transformed into a woman by Hera in order to be punished for attacking a pair of mating snakes. During his time as a woman, Tiresias gave birth to Manto. Manto was captured during the War of the Epigoni and brought to Delphi as a war prize. She became a mother to Amphilochus and Tisiphone by Alcmaeon, the leader of the Epigoni. God Apollo made her his priestess and sent her to Colophon to found an oracle devoted to him. Manto and Apollo had a son Mopsus. In Colophon, she was married by Rhacius. Manto once warned queen Niobe to stop degraded Leto. Niobe refused to stop and was consequently punished by Apollo and Artemis. According to Roman mythology, Manto travelled to Italy. There, she and god Tiberinus had a son, Ocnus. Ocnus founded Mantua and named it after his mother.
