Mansour el-Essawy

Mansour el-Essawy (18 September 1937-16 January 2023) was Interior Minister of Egypt from March to November 2011, succeeding Mahmoud Wagdy and preceding Mohamed Youssef Ibrahim.

Biography[]

Mansour el-Essawy was born in Qena Governorate, Egypt in 1937, and he served in an Egyptian Army engineering unit from 1955 to 1957 before becoming a policeman. He became a colonel in 1973, a brigadier in 1983, a major-general in 1987, Giza's police chief in 1988, director of the Cairo police from 1995 to 1996, and Governor of Minya Governorate in 1996. In 2011, he was appointed Interior Minister due to his reputation as an anti-corruption crusader, but he resigned later that year.
