Mamnoon Hussain

Mamnoon Hussain (23 December 1940 – 14 July 2021) was Governor of Sindh from 19 June to 12 October 1999 (succeeding Moinuddin Haider and preceding Azim Daudpota) and President of Pakistan from 9 September 2013 to 9 September 2018 (succeeding Asif Ali Zardari and preceding Arif Alvi).

Biography[]

Mamnoon Hussain was born in Agra, British India on 23 December 1940, and his family migrated to Karachi, Pakistan in 1949 following the Partition of India. He founded his own textile company, joined the center-right Pakistan Muslim League in 1970, and served as President of the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry from 1997 to 1999. In 1999, Hussain was elected Governor of Sindh, but he was deposed and imprisoned following Pervez Musharraf's military coup. Hussain was loyal to Nawaz Sharif, and he served as Prime Minister Sharif's President from 2013 to 2018, maintaining a low-key profile, apart from heading a polio eradication program. He died of cancer in 2021 at the age of 80.
