Mamady Doumbouya

Mamady Doumbouya (1980-) was the military ruler of Guinea from 5 September 2021, succeeding President Alpha Conde.

Biography[]

Mamady Doumbouya was born in the Kankan Region of Guinea in 1980 to a Mandinka family, and he served as a corporal in the French Foreign Legion before returning to Guinea to head the army's special forces under President Alpha Conde. He was promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel in 2019 and to Colonel in 2020, and, by 2021, he was reportedly seeking more authority for the Special Forces Group. The European Union threatened to sanction him and 24 other individuals for human rights abuses, and, on 5 September 2021, he led the 2021 Guinean coup d'etat, which detained and overthrew President Conde. Doumbouya, inspired by Ghanaian president Jerry Rawlings' example, formed the National Committee of Reconciliation and Development junta to govern Guinea, with himself at its helm.
