Malise V of Strathearn (1294-1357) was Earl of Strathearn from 1330 to 1334 (succeeding Malise IV and preceding Maurice de Moravia) and Jarl of Orkneyar from 1331 to 1350 (succeeding Magnus Jonsson and preceding Erengisle Suneson).
Biography[]
Malise was born in 1294, the son of Earl Malise IV of Strathearn. He succeeded his father as Earl of Strathearn in 1330, and, a year later, he inherited Orkneyar from the heirless Magnus Jonsson, as he was the great-great-grandson of Gilbert of Orkney. Malise fought alongside the Scots at the Battle of Halidon Hill, commanding the third division of the Scots army against King Edward III of England. In retaliation, the English puppet king Edward Balliol confiscated his earldom and gave it to the Earl of Surrey. Malise failed to recover Strathearn, so he settled in Caithness. In 1344, the High Steward confiscated Strathearn from him due to his surrender to the English, and he died in 1357.
