Makarias of Gortyn (462 BC-) was an Athenian strategos during the Peloponnesian War.
Biography[]
Makarias was born in Gortyn, Messara, Crete in 462 BC, and he rose to be a Delian League strategos during the Peloponnesian War. He commanded the Athenian garrison of Messara, centered at Daidalos Fort near Gortyn, and his forces were gradually backed into a corner by Milanion's invading Spartan army. Ultimately, the Spartans - with help from the mercenary Kassandra - defeated Makarias' Athenian army on the Messaran plain and forced Messara to side with Sparta instead.
