The Maison du Roi was the military entourage of the King of France from the 15th to the 18th centuries. The first French guard regiment was the Garde Ecossaise, a Scottish guard, which was formed in 1440; the Maison du Roi was established in 1676 as a company of royal bodyguards. The Maison du Roi would be disbanded during the French Revolution after the abolition of the monarchy, and it was briefly recreated as a twelve-regiment Royal Guard from 1816 to 1830 under the Bourbon Restoration. Subsequently, the Royal Guard continued to existence during the reign of King Louis Philippe I of the Orleanists until the July Monarchy was overthrown in revolutions of 1848.
