Maia was a 5th-century BC Elean Greek pickpocket who lived in Olympia. She was orphaned at a young age and became a street child, and she was taken under the wing of the con man Alopex, who had her pick pockets as he distracted victims by posing as a fortune teller. However, Maia found herself stuck in that life as a result of the Athenian captain Pitholaos virtually enslaving the street children, keeping most of them in cages and forcing them to bring him their drachmae. In 428 BC, Maia pickpocketed the mercenary Kassandra, but Kassandra chased her down, and Maia tearfully confessed that the captain had forced her to pick pockets, and also said that the captain had stolen her mother's necklace. Kassandra felt deep sympathy for Maia, who reminded her of her former acquaintance Phoibe, and she ultimately killed Pitholaos and brought Maia's mother's necklace back to her, touching the heart of the initially-hostile Maia.
