Maham Anga

Maham Anga (died 1562) was the foster mother of the Mughal emperor Akbar and regent of the empire from 1560 to 1562.

Biography[]

Maham Anga served as Akbar's chief wet nurse prior to his enthronement as Mughal emperor in 1556, and her son Adham Khan was raised as Akbar's foster brother. The shrewd and ambitious Maham Anga managed Akbar's household and harem, and, in 1560, she persuaded Akbar to dismiss the general Bairam Khan as his regent, assuming control over the young emperor. In 1562, however, Adham Khan was executed for murdering Akbar's favorite general Ataga Khan, causing Maham Anga to die of grief soon after.
