Magnus Olafsson (1195-24 November 1265) was Count of Mann from 1249 to 1265, succeeding Rognvaldr Olafsson and preceding Alexander III of Scotland. He was the last Norse ruler of Mann.
Biography[]
Magnus Olafsson was born in 1195, a son of Olaf the Black and the brother of Haraldr Olafsson and Rognvaldr Olafsson. He succeeded his brother Rognvaldr on his murder in 1249, and, in 1261, King Alexander III of Scotland attempted to purchase Mann from Magnus. Magnus refused, so the Scots raided the Hebrides. This led to King Haakon IV of Norway sending a fleet to intervene, leading to the Scottish-Norwegian War. Following the 1263 Battle of Largs, the Norwegian fleet was forced to withdraw, ending Haakon's expedition. On Magnus' death at Castle Rushen in 1265, the Isle of Man was formally ceded to Scotland.
