Biography[]
Maggie Mae Harris was born in Chicago, Illinois on 23 May 1905, the daughter of George Seymour Harris and Mary Anna Earles. In 1931, she left her career as a dancer in Chicago to find a more quiet life in rural Virginia, settling in Franklin County. There, she found work as a waitress at Forrest Bondurant's restaurant, and she fell in love with her boss, although he was hesitant about hiring her. She was later harassed by two men, and Forrest beat them both; Maggie went on to resign and leave, but the two men slit Forrest's throat and raped Maggie, who kept the assault from Forrest. Maggie considered returning to Chicago, but Forrest convinced her to stay and gave her a spare room, and they began a relationship. In 1933, she and Forrest were married, but they had no children. Her husband died in an accident in 1965, and she died in Pittsylvania County, Virginia in 1992 at the age of 87.
