Madog ap Llywelyn (died 1313) was the leader of the Welsh revolt of 1294-95 against English rule. A member of a junior house of the House of Aberffraw, Madog was defeated at the Battle of Maes Moydog and died in prison after 1312.
Biography[]
Madog ap Llywelyn was born into a family of nobles, and his family was forced to flee to England after opposing Llywelyn ap Gruffudd at Bryn Derwin in 1255. Madog returned to Gwynedd after Llywelyn's death in 1282, and he received lands from King Edward I of England in Anglesey. In 1294, he led a Welsh revolt against the English in response to unfair administration and increased taxes, anticipating that King Edward would be on campaign in France at the time of the revolt. However, the invasion of France had been cancelled due to poor weather, leading to the English crushing the Welsh at the Battle of Maes Moydog in 1295. Madog was captured by the English, and he died in prison after 1312.
