Maddalena de Medici

Maddalena de Medici (1473-1519) was the daughter of Lorenzo de Medici and the wife of Franceschetto Cybo.

Biography[]

Maddalena de Medici was born in Florence in 1473, the daughter of Lorenzo de Medici, and she was educated in humanistic cultures by Poliziano. In 1488, she married Pope Innocent VIII's illegitimate son Franceschetto Cybo, which helped her brother Giovanni de Medici in gaining a cardinal's hat. She also helped friends and poorer people get aid and positions within the Catholic Church and government, and she turned a thermal bath resort in Stigliano into a renovated and profitable resort. In 1513, her brother (now Pope) made her son Innocenzo Cybo a cardinal, and she worked to get all of her children married to noble families. She died in Rome in 1519, and her cousin Pope Clement VII had her buried at St. Peter's Basilica.
