Madagascar is an island country in the Indian Ocean with Antanarivo as its capital. The island was once home to several fragmented kingdoms, as well as serving as a pirate haven during the Golden Age of Piracy, and the island was unified by the Merina Kingdom in the early 19th century. In 1897, France annexed Madagascar after years of exerting its influence over the monarchy, and it gained independence in 1960. The country was ruled by the Marxist-Leninist "Democratic Republic of Madagascar" from 1975 to 1992, when democracy was restored. In 2010, after a rebellion, the country adopted its current constitution. In 2016, the nation had a population of 24,430,325 people.
