Ma Zhong (died 222) was a general of Eastern Wu.
Biography[]
Ma Zhong served under Sun Quan, the lord of Wujun. In 219 AD, under the command of Pan Zhang, he captured Guan Yu and Guan Ping during Lu Meng's invasion of Jing Province and the battle of Fan Castle. Ma Zhong took Guan Yu's horse Red Hare and offered it as a gift to Sun Quan, but Sun Quan refused and returned the horse to Ma Zhong; Red Hare starved himself to death to join his late master.
In 222 AD, at the Battle of Xiaoting (Yiling), Ma Zhong slew Liu Bei's general Huang Zhong with an arrow, killing the old general. Hoping to appease their former master Liu Bei, Wu generals Fu Shiren and Mi Fang (who had defected from Liu Bei at Fan Castle and were responsible for Guan Yu's death) killed Ma Zhong. However, the two of them were executed when they returned to Liu Bei.
