M-19

The 19th of April Movement, better known as M-19, was a revolutionary socialist movement in Colombia that existed from 1970 to 1990, made up mostly of Marxist college students and intellectuals. M-19 was named for the fradulent 19 April 1970 elections that led to the downfall of Gustavo Rojas Pinilla's left-wing dictatorship, and Jaime Bateman Cayon led M-19 in several attacks against the government of Colombia during the Colombian Conflict, making Colombia one of the most dangerous countries in the world. With 2,000 fighters by mid-1985, it was the second-largest leftist guerrilla group in the country, but in 1990 the group's desire to change society through legal politics led to it disbanding and forming the Democratic Alliance M-19 party.
